Your answers to our daily health and wellness questions will be revealed on a nightly basis during Lights, Music, Action at THE BEACON from 6 - 9 pm. Just before our data-weaving drones fly!
When the majority answer 'A' (tend to agree), THE BEACON will respond with a BRAINARD BLUE lighting program; a wavelength of light known to elevate mood, an effect discovered by Jefferson's own Dr. Bud Brainard, The quadcopter drones will also respond to your answers, with a WAVY weaving pattern during the evening’s flight.
When the majority answer 'B' (neutral), THE BEACON will respond with a WARM LIGHTING program; these wavelengths of light not only provide easy navigation, but do not suppress melatonin production, so they are used in light therapy to aid sleep. The quadcopter drones will also respond to your answers, with a STITCHED weaving pattern during the evening’s flight.
When the majority answer 'C' (tend to disagree), THE BEACON will respond with a RED lighting program, which according to color theorists, enhances human metabolism, increases respiration rate, and raises blood pressure. The quadcopter drones will also respond to your answers, with a VARIEGATED weaving pattern during the evening’s flight.
THE BEACON is an experiment in generative architecture and functions to stimulate new ideas between medicine and design and will take place during DesignPhiladelphia 2016. THE BEACON ecosystem, is a collaboration with MEDstudio@JEFF, directed by Peter Lloyd Jones, PhD, and Jenny Sabin Studio, who lead the architectural design. THE BEACON will be completed over 10 days using new technologies, including drones and smart textiles, that are already reshaping the future of medicine and design. These and other prototypes will respond to health-related questions posed to the public via THE BEACON app. Daily events will range from meetings with architects, who are radically redesigning hospitals, to Mindfulness Movement classes.
THE BEACON is also the place to meet The Rail Park, an organization dedicated to the development and maintenance of this future icon. The park itself serves as a data source for THE BEACON’s design, and has shaped a new collaborative partnership with MEDstudio@JEFF, founded on a common mission to improve the health and wellness of all Philadelphians via design.
Public spaces, including the future Rail Park should promote health and wellness through exercise and community. Outdoor fitness events, including yoga, mindfulness movement, spinning, and pick-up volleyball, will be hosted by THE BEACON during its 10 days at Lubert Plaza. Classes will be led by instructors from the Jefferson Recreation & Fitness Center. Please note that spinning class will be open to TJU students with valid ID only, and attendees must bring yoga mats.
Detailed program information and links to registration can be found here at THE BEACON web app. The app for health and wellness will pose daily questions to the public, and THE BEACON itself will actively respond to this feedback by changing its form and function. The app will continue dialogue with the public, providing an interactive interface for THE BEACON to collect health-centered feedback. The data and insight collected will be used to rethink and redesign health and wellness.
All events are free and some require registration. Detailed program information can be found under the Events tab below.
